Below are some rough notes for reference throughout the term. They are not intended for citation or quotation. (Please pardon any typos.) I’ve organized them into eight sections:
Paper Computing
What is “paper computing?” It:
- May be a synonym for tabletop gaming (see Kirschenbaum);
- Stresses paper as a medium for storage, processing, and use (including, but not limited to, histories of books and early computing);
- Highlights computing as embodied labour (neither abstract nor fully automated) (see Miles, Buurma, Heffernan, and Terras);
- Notes how such labour is ignored often in histories of science, technology, media, art, and literature;
- Underscores how (like computer screens) paper prompts input and encourages not only reading but also use (see Gitelman);
- Foregrounds design (graphic, interaction, experience) and how paper may structure or facilitate certain forms of perception (see Miles on the tabular view, Drucker on artists’ books, and Radway on zines);
- Likely involves quantification or procedural thinking (see Kirschenbaum and Galloway);
- Frequently blends attention to mechanics and protocols with stories and narratives, while also investing in leisure or inefficiency (in times of 24/7 productivity); and,
- Raises questions about how established forms such as artists’ books, manifestos, and zines (as experiments with paper, if you will) are entwined with gaming and, in particular, tabletop gaming.

- abstracts: a game that does not rely significantly (if at all) on chance or a theme; very little (if any) information is hidden, and dice are almost never used
- accumulation: a game where the aim is collect and/or keep components or points, often with the intent to prevent or inhibit other players from doing the same
- actual play: documentation and circulation of play sessions through podcasts, video, or the like
- alignment: a categorization of the moral and ethical perspective of player characters, non-player characters, and societies/groups in the game
- algorithm: a procedure or formula for conducting a specific action; performed by people and materials in tabletop games; usually black-boxed in videogames
- ameritrash: theme-forward games featuring player-to-player conflict; often driven by chance and character development (compare with eurogame)
- analysis paralysis: taking a long time to make a decision during your turn, or frequently changing your mind either during a turn or throughout the game
- area control (or area influence): a mechanic that awards players for controlling or influencing a majority of units (or territories, or tiles) in a game
- asymmetry: a game where players are afforded with different actions or abilities; often these differences are expressed through “factions” or groups in the theme
- auction: a mechanic that requires players to place a bid (usually with money) on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance their position in the game; these goods afford future actions or improve a position (see also bidding)
- balance: describes whether the challenge is appropriate for the audience, whether the game is fair for all players involved, whether components are weighted equally, and/or whether strategies toward end conditions are equal; actual balance may differ from perceived balance (see Ian Schreiber)
- bidding: see auction
- bluffing: an attempt to deceive someone into believing that one can or will do something in a game
- campaign: the game and/or characters change over time, such that the results of one game may influence future plays; they thus involve multiple play sessions
- character development: a feature that affords character growth or change during a game; common in role-playing games (RPGs) and often associated with role-play
- chasing: a mechanic involving the pursuit of other characters or players
- chits: a type of game counter used to track progress, randomize a game, afford a “fog of war,” or suggest terrain attributes
- collection (or set collection): a mechanic that encourages players to collect sets of items; common in party games and hand management
- collusion: when players form secret agreements during a game; some games, including secret identity games, encourage collusion
- components: tactile parts or bits of a game
- cooperation (or co-op): games where players win or lose together through mutual reliance, usually without a referee or moderator; also refrains from pitting players against each other (compare with negotiation)
- deck or pool building: players have a personal pool/collection of cards/tokens that provide different actions and/or resources; a subset of those cards/tokens is randomly drawn each turn; players manage the contents of their pool/collection by adding and removing cards/tokens over the course of the gameplay, often through actions provided by the cards/tokens themselves; over time, players build decks/pools that are more and more specialized and effective towards some purpose.
- deduction: forming conclusions based on available premises; includes social deduction where players may guess the identity of other players
- default settings: the conditions, options, and mechanics assumed by the game and its manual; may be adjusted through house roles, mods, or the like
- dexterity: games that involve physical dexterity to perform actions or tasks
- drafting: players pick cards, dice, or tokens from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to eithr gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or assemble hands of cards or collections of dice/tokens used to meet objectives within the game
- dynamics: embodied patterns of play
- edition: a particular form or version of a game; used to develop a game over time but also to apply special interests or themes to it
- efficiency: a game that focuses on converting resources into points
- elimination: when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without them
- end/win conditions: the conditions that result in the conclusion of a game; mechanisms include empty hands, group or individual achievements, set collections, area control, arrival at a destination, the expiry of time, the end of a story, player elimination, a score, and the conclusion of a scenario or level
- escape: a puzzle-based collaborative mechanic in games; also manifests as a theme via the escape room
- eurogame: a strategy-driven game with indirect player interaction (or conflict), abstract physical components, balance, and little (if any) chance or randomness (compare with ameritrash)
- family: the genre of the game
- feature list: a list of a game’s features; may include components as well as mechanics
- game: a situation with guidelines and procedures (see Flanagan)
- game space: the area of the game
- game state: all the information or variables at play in a given gaming scenario; may include everything from number of players and components to possible actions and conflicts to goals and win conditions; essentially the game’s “metagame” (see Romero and Schreiber)
- game view: the info or variables a given player can see (compare with game state) (see Romero and Schreiber)
- hidden or secret identity: a game where players are given a secret identity and asked to deduce each other’s identities; players may not always be aware of their own identities; often creates an “us vs. them” dynamic
- induction: forming conclusions by inferring the general from the specific; often used to drive experimentation in games
- incentive: what motivates players to continue playing a game or to play it more than once
- investment: used by players to describe the replay value of a game; may also imply a game mechanic involving the investment of capital
- kibitzing: offering unwanted or meddlesome advice to other players; also, to provide running commentary on a game as it’s being played
- kingmaking: when a player who cannot win helps to determine who will; may be treated as a design problem
- legacy: games that change over time based on the outcome of each game played and the choices made by players
- leveling (or character advancement): a mechanic or feature that provides players and characters with a sense of progress, which is often expressed numerically
- magic circle: “the idea that a boundary exists between a game and the world outside the game;” this boundary fosters the production of new meaning; does not actually exist but may be an effective design concept (see Eric Zimmerman)
- mechanic or mechanism: an action or function that can be performed in a game (compare with rule)
- melding: a meld is a set of matching cards, typically three or more, that earn players points and/or allow them to deplete their hand
- metagaming: analyzing a game aloud as you play it; used for planning but, in some cases, also to shape play and dynamics; depending on the game and community, it may be encouraged or frowned upon (see Stewart Woods) (compare with kibitzing)
- mixed motive: games where the interests or incentives of players are neither strictly coincident nor strictly opposed
- multi-use cards: the design of cards that serve multiple purposes in a single game (from money and abilities to resources and effects)
- negotiation: a mechanic where players are encouraged to make deals, alliances, and bribes; may also involve betrayal (compare with cooperation)
- quarterbacking: when one player tells other players what to do, often because they are (or think they are) more familiar with the game; common in co-op games
- pacing: the speed or intensity of game play or progression through a game
- pickup and deliver: requires players to pick up an item at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board; initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random; there is usually a rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go
- points salad: a negative term used to describe games where all or many actions yield points
- prediction: a mechanic that requires players to forecast or anticipate what may happen later in the game (compare with randomness)
- programmed movement (or action/movement programming): a mechanic where players (often secretly) choose and commit their moves for the next turn; all actions are determined and locked before they are executed; requires planning ahead
- randomness: a lack of predictability in events; this lack is usually designed into a game and interpreted by players as chance, luck, and even fate; when used persuasively, it increases incentive and/or perceived relevance of actions; when not used persuasively, it overwhelms players, decreases incentive, and/or eclipses sense of agency or choice (compare with prediction)
- real-time: when players take their turns simultaneously; players may not be rewarded if they do not act in time
- risk: the perceived payoff or penalty for an action; it entails uncertainty, reward, and randomness
- route or network building: a mechanic in games involving networks where players are encouraged to build connections or long chains of pieces; common in train and grid games
- rules: guidelines or protocols for action; communicated in the manual or rulebook (compare with mechanic)
- rules lawyer: a player who privileges the letter of the law over the spirit of play, often to gain advantage over other players; may also involve referencing obscure rules in a manual or handbook
- shedding: when the player’s objective is to be the first person to empty their hand of all cards (compare with accumulation)
- signaling: a game with two players (sender and receiver); the sender has one of several types (private to the sender and unknown to the receiver) that determines their function and affects the messages they send; the receiver has only one type and thus their function is known; signaling games are Bayesian games, where players have incomplete information about the other players (e.g., info about their available strategies or payoffs), but also have beliefs with known probability distributions
- tableau: a family of games where players have a visible array of components that they build and manipulate; the array affects the quality, quantity, or variety of available actions
- theme: the subject matter (story, setting, characters, and even design) of the game
- tiles: components used as playing pieces, board pieces, or geometries in games (compare (Dominoes with Carcassonne)
- time track: component used to represent or measure progress in a game
- trading: players exchange game items between each other
- trashing: putting cards (often strategically) into the discard pile
- turns: a moment when a player may act; discrete in turn-based games; simultaneous in real-time games; also a moment when analysis paralysis is most visible or palpable
- turtling: a strategy emphasizing defense, usually to avoid risk
- twitching: a mechanic that requires fast decision-making
- uncertainty principle: Werner Heisenberg’s principle that it’s impossible to measure something without disturbing it; confidence in the exactitude of frequency information increases with duration of observation
- variable player order: when the sequence of player turns is inconsistent from one round of play to the next; often affects player strategies and dynamics
- worker placement (or action drafting): requires a player to select specific actions from a set available to all players; actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on selected action spaces; each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the draft; some games achieve the same effect in reverse: the turn begins with action spaces filled by markers, which are claimed by players for some cost
- zero-sum game: a player’s gain or loss of action (or utility) is exactly balanced by the other players’ gain or loss of action (or utility); the total gains less the total losses equals zero
Design Speak
- 80/20 rule: focus resources on the critical 20 percent; 80 percent of a product’s usage involves 20 percent of its features (see Vilfredo Pareto; Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- action writing: either prompts specific behaviours/responses (against standardized or normalized reading practices) or contains charged design elements (see Steven Marcus)
- A-D-M: a player-centric approach to game design; aesthetics (A) are observed in dynamics (D) that are linked to mechanics (M); aesthetics may include sensation, fantasy, narrative, challenge, social interaction, discovery, expression, and ritual (see Hunicke, LeBlanc, and Zubek)
- affordances: what environments or objects offer individual animals; always relational and thus never fixed; exists regardless of whether it is perceived or recognized (see J.J. Gibson)
- aleatory procedures: the use of chance or randomness in design; often intended to reduce a sense of control; also a critique of romantic genius
- alternative uses task: ask people to list as many possible uses for a common household item; assessed on originality, fluency, flexibility, and elaboration (see Guilford via Kari Kraus)
- artifact analysis: study a given text’s materials (composition, components, durability, wear, disposibility), aesthetics (form, color, texture, references, emotional significance), affordances (operational uses, functions, complexity), context (where it’s stored and carried, whether part of a larger whole, time and space, ownership, public, private), and potential for misuse and repurposing (see Martin and Hanington)
- artist’s book: interrogates the material and conceptual form of the book; not reducible to the vision of an editor; refrains from standardized or mechanical repetition; imaginative use of methods and means of production, including but not limited to fine printing; may involve indie printing or publishing; expresses independent or activist thought; implies an informed viewer; not a democratic multiple (see Johanna Drucker)
- blanks: they are printed and used, not authored or read; they connect the intimacy of material objects and collections with the abstractions of bureaucracy, forms, and social structures; also prompt input from readers (see Lisa Gitelman)
- cognitive walkthrough: evaluating whether the order of prompts in a system/interface reflects how people process tasks (see Martin and Hanington)
- common fate: things that move in the same direction are assumed to be related (Gestalt principle); moving elements are figures and stationary elements are ground (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- concept doc: an early step in design; it explains the proposed game, identifies its category and intended audience (including number of players, age minimum, and anticipated duration of play), describes the theme and key mechanics (including goals, chance / randomness, and player choices), lists core features, and may engage related issues of history, aesthetics, and politics
- content inventory and audit: a content inventory tells you what your content is; an audit recommends what it should be
- context of use: a way to consider actual situations and practices of use (as opposed to ideal forms or intended uses) (see Andrea Botero)
- design charrette: participants rapidly generate ideas and rotate through small groups to bring ideas forward (see Martin and Hanington)
- design as inquiry: treating design as a mode or line of research, as opposed to rendering it to be a quality of an object or a property inherent to an object (see Daniela Rosner)
- design fiction: the use of prototype objects that tell stories about possible near futures (see Julian Bleecker)
- design for cause: find the factors that caused an effect, and design those factors into your game to guide players and procedures; the emphasis is on why something happened (see Pulsipher)
- design for effect: identify an effect that represents history or an event, and then design toward experience of that effect; the emphasis is on what happened (see Pulsipher)
- desire lines: traces of use or wear that indicate preferred methods of interaction; they suggest areas for improvement (given strong and unbiased user preferences) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- diegetic action: action that contributes to the theme or narrative development of a game (see Alexander Galloway)
- elaborative rehearsal: memorization results from maintenance and elaborative rehearsal; maintenance rehearsal involves repetition whereas elaborative rehearsal involves engaging in different types of analysis; recall is most likely when it involves distinctiveness, relevance, and a degree of elaborative rehearsal (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- Elito method: observation (what did you see, read, or hear?), judgment (what is your opinion about it?), value (what values were at work?), concept/sketch (what can a team/person do to address the issues?), and key metaphor (what is the hook or tagline?) (see Martin and Hanington)
- entry points: good entry points feature minimal barriers, points of prospect, and progressive lures (entry points should survey available options and provide visible navigation options as well as orientation cues) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- feature or scope creep: when projects continue to expand by adding new features or expanding their scope of inquiry/engagement; adding features adds complexity, which may be time-consuming; some people create milestones to “freeze” a project; questions to help prevent creep include, Could the new idea or component stand on its own? Is it actually a new project? What exactly will it improve? Can it wait? Have you slept on it? How much more work will it produce, and for whom? How much more time will it require? What could instead be removed, revised, or changed? (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- Fitts’ Law: keep important objects or controls close and large (time required to touch an object is a function of the object’s size and distance) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- five hat racks: info can be organized five ways (category or similarity, time, location, alphabet, and continuum or magnitude) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- flexibility trade-off: some argue that usability and performance decrease as flexibility of a design increases (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- flow: occurs when people are challenged at or near maximum skill level; in flow, people lose track of time and joy increases (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- fly-on-the-wall: unobstrusive observation of people or behaviours without direct participation or interference (see Martin and Hanington)
- Hick’s Law: the time it takes to make a decision increases with the number of options (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- icons: the use of pictorial images to improve recognition and recall; may increase language independence and reduce performance load; examples include resemblance, exemplar, and symbolic icons (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- inspiration (for design): inspiration assumes various forms; it’s not always an homage; it may be partial, or it may be a reaction to a past movement or principle; it may be just an impression, or it may be quite literal (imitation or mimicry)
- interface: a space or modality of engagement between two or more systems or entities; a common example is the graphical user interface (GUI) of computers; interfaces help turn this (e.g., input) into that (e.g., output); they are designed even if they are intangible, unstable, and difficult (impossible?) to isolate; they are often depicted as either portals (transparent windows that transport you) or edges (boundary-makers that mediate you) (see Lori Emerson and Alexander Galloway)
- inverted pyramid: start with the lead / findings / hook (base), then the body, and then the conclusion (tip) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- Kano analysis: reviewers assign features to categories; required (baseline, quality element), desired (valuable, one-dimensional quality element), exciter/delighter (surprising, attractive quality element), neutral (indifferent quality element), and anti-feature (reverse quality element) (see Martin and Hanington)
- KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid; minimal elements with minimal interaction between them; simple designs are easier to build and maintain (see Kelly Johnson)
- language independence: the degree to which a game works across alphabetic languages or without the need for alphabetic languages; language independent games rely heavily on icons to prompt and facilitate action
- legibility: the use of clear typefaces (with or without serifs) and dark text on light backgrounds (or vice versa); avoiding not only patterned backgrounds but also line lengths of much more than 10-12 words or 35-55 characters as well as monospaced fonts (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- love and breakup letters: personify a design or product and then write a letter loving it or breaking up with it (see Martin and Hanington)
- M-D-A: a designer-centric approach to game design; mechanics (M) enable certain dynamics (D) that foster particular experiences and aesthetics (A) (see Hunicke, LeBlanc, and Zubek)
- machine-woven book: a book consisting of thread woven by a Jacquard machine using punched cards; see https://www.uvic.ca/library/locations/home/spcoll/collections/medieval/ms-fr-2.php
- machines: a system of mechanisms that shape actuator input to achieve a specific application of output forces and movement; a popular term during the 19th c.
- maintenance rehearsal: memorization results from maintenance and elaborative rehearsal; maintenance rehearsal involves repetition whereas elaborative rehearsal involves engaging in different types of analysis; recall is most likely when it involves distinctiveness, relevance, and a degree of elaborative rehearsal
- manifesto: public declarations (and often loud ones at that) (Mary Ann Caws 2001: xix), announcements of motives for forthcoming action (xix), acts of deliberate manipulation (both aesthetic and political) (xix), rooted in the hand (manus) or handmade (xix), directives (usually against something) articulated by a specific “we” (xxi), serious, and frequently without irony (xxi), situated in time, typically with an investment in being first (xxiii), instructive or pedagogical (xxiii), arranged or, indeed, designed (xxiii), efforts to label or categorize (even if loosely) (xxiv), duck, not decoration (xxv), written in the present tense (now!) (xxvi), advertisements (they sell themselves) (xxv), and subject to redefinition and recontextualization over time (xxviii-xxix)
- mashup: the combination of two or more board games into one
- moveable book: another term for a pop-up book or a book with moving (paper) parts
- near futures: thinking and designing in terms of possible tomorrows (as opposed to distant futures) (see Julian Bleecker)
- nondiegetic action: action that does not contribute to the theme or narrative development of a game (see Alexander Galloway)
- nudging: modifying behaviour without restricting options (smart defaults, clear feedback, aligned incentives, structured choices, visible goals) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- Ockham’s razor: given two functionally equal designs, choose the simpler one (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- parallel prototyping: simultaneously exploring multiple design ideas before selecting one approach; shifts focus from designer to designing (see Martin and Hanington)
- participatory research and design: cyclical, collaborative processes that intend to change members of the inquiry; involves numerous groups (not just designers) in the design process (see Martin and Hanington)
- performance load: cognitive (mental) and kinematic (physical); reduce cognitive load by reducing information density; reduce kinematic load by reducing steps in a task (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- personas: representative profiles based on archetypal descriptions of players from research (see Martin and Hanington)
- playtesting: “playtesting is all about getting people to come play your game to see if it engenders the experience for which it was designed;” stages are exploring a design space, refining a design, and negotiating with all involved (see Hammer et al.)
- prediction: “the use of statistical models, simulations, and testable hypotheses to forecast future events” (see Kari Kraus)
- procedural representation or narrative design: “close correspondence between [a] game’s formal devices and abstracted elements of [a] historical [or fictitious] situation” (see Kirschenbaum; see also Salen Tekinbas, Zimmerman, and Ryan)
- progressive disclosure: separating information into layers and presenting only what’s necessary or relevant; descreases/reduces performance load (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- protocol: a principle and procedure of organization; in technology circles, it may be universally adopted (e.g., http) to standardize information flow and communication (see Galloway)
- restoration: “a means to re-establish [a cultural object] in a completed state, which may in fact never have actually existed at any given time;” involves speculation in the process (see Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc via Kari Kraus)
- scenario prototyping: active participation in design through subjective engagement with a prototype; a narrative exploring past or future uses of a design/product from a user’s point of view (see Martin and Hanington)
- serial position effect: things presented at the beginning and end of a sequence are more memorable (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- simulation exercises: deep approximations of human or environmental conditions, with an emphasis on empathy and functional interaction (see Martin and Hanington)
- speculative design: favours inquiry, experimentation, and expression over usability and marketability; calls attention to the possibilities and consequences of technological development and implementation; treats futures as media for imaginative thought; asks what is possible, plausible, probable, and preferable (see Carl DiSalvo and Jonathan Lukens; Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby; and Stuart Candy)
- stability (refining): stable design environments favour refinement (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- stickiness (SUCCES): one explanation for why things go viral; Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, Stories (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- storyboarding: visual narrative that generates empathy and communicates the context for proposed design (usually only three to six panels) (see Martin and Hanington)
- structural forms: masses (materials that are piled or stacked to create forms), frames (struts joined to form a skeleton), and shells (wrap around a volume) (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- swimlanes: four in total, presented in parallel; storyboard lane (captures events in a user story using comics, photographs, images), user experience lane (details user experience with a flowchart), business process lane (articulate the business logic of the experience), and tools and systems lane (back-end technologies that support actions) (see Martin and Hanington)
- think-aloud protocol: participants verbalize what they are doing and thinking as they complete a task (see Martin and Hanington)
- uniform connectedness: things connected with lines or boxes are perceived to more related than things not connected (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- volatility (experimentation): volatile environments tend to favour experimentation (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- wireframing: a technique for drawing the structure, layout, hierarchy, format, and functionality of an interface; used to express concepts in visual form; usually done early in a project; specific content (particular images or certain words) is saved for later, and placeholder content (such as lorem ipsum) is used instead
- Wizard of Oz: participants are led to believe they are interacting with a working prototype, but in reality a researcher is acting as a proxy from behind the scenes; experience is realistic but the prototype isn’t functioning (see Martin and Hanington)
- Zeigarnik effect: interrupted or incomplete tasks are better remembered than completed tasks (see Lidwell, Holden, and Butler)
- zine: variant of fanzine; made by fans or aficionados; often made by collectives, who may be anonymous; origin story linked to sci-fi scenes of the 1930s; “handmade, noncommercial, irregularly issued, small-run, paper publications circulated by individuals participating in alternative, special-interest communities” (140); grew in popularity with punk during the 1970s and 80s; symbols of an “alternative press”; often asserts voice of youth (as subjects, not objects) (145); call “forth a range of intersubjective activities, including reading, certainly, but also exchanging, mailing, bartering, networking, letter writing, and even face-to-face meeting” (148) (see Janice Radway)
Theory Speak
- affect: unqualified or pre-personal intensity; not feelings (because it isn’t labeled); not emotions (because it isn’t projected); important in studies of play (see Brian Massumi and Eric Shouse)
- conjectural criticism: “the recovery of lost readings in classical texts, and the computational modeling of the evolution of a literary work or the descent of a natural language;” it is “concerned with issues of transmission, transformation, and prediction” (see Kari Kraus)
- critical play: “Critical play is characterized by a careful examination of social, cultural, political, and even personal themes that function as alternates to popular play spaces;” also, “using play for a phase change” (see Flanagan)
- deformance: interpretation through alteration (reordering a text, deleting all verbs or nouns, or reading backward) (see Samuels and McGann)
- eversion: how the internet has turned inside-out, from cyberspace to internet of things; one approach to understanding how board games are played online, with tablets, or through a combination of media types (see Gibson and Jones)
- forensic imagination: creative and critical work involving deep attention to the material particulars or intricate details of media; often includes an interest in storage, inscription, and instrumentation; think Blake seeing a world in a grain of sand (see Matthew Kirschenbaum)
- forensic materiality: associated with the matter of media, individualizations between their versions, data inscription, storage, and the space of hard drives (see Kirschenbaum) (compare with formal materiality)
- formal materiality: associated with the symbolic logic of media, similarity between their versions, data transmission, modeling, and the space of computer screens (see Kirschenbaum) (compare with forensic materiality)
- ludic algorithm: a position asserting that “interpretation is merely aided by mechanism, not produced mathematically or mechanically,” with an emphasis on the hermeneutic basis of algorithms and algorithmic criticism (see Nowviskie)
- ludology: the study of games and gaming, with an emphasis on play and cultures of play
- media archaeology: “a methodological preference for rejecting the projection of generalized theories in favor of precise case studies, that is, for embedded theory;” “this method aims to avoid prematurely interpreting archival or archaeological evidence as documents of history but rather isolates this data into discrete series in order to rearrange them and open them for different configurations. The mechanism of human memory is selective, transformative, and thus productive of historical imagination, whereas the general inventory of photography [for example] in accordance with media logic registers temporal events without demanding a binding historical narrative;” “media archaeology is on the side of the indexical and the archival mode of writing” (see Wolfgang Ernst via Jussi Parikka)
- memory: the process of compiling or re-membering this into that; contingent on materials and embodiment; necessarily relational and arguably always interpretive; prompts questions about what people wish to forget or not remember (compare with storage) (see Wendy Chun)
- narratology: the study (often structural) of narrative, including how narrative shapes interpretation, perception, anbd the reproduction of stories
- ontological theatre: the use of scenarios, media, or performance to inspire people to make something similar to what’s presented; used to prompt engagement instead of re-presentation (see Andrew Pickering)
- procedural experiments: the use of algorithmic or “uncreative” methods to produce unexpected and illuminative results (see Bethany Nowviskie and OuLiPo)
- procedural literacy: “the ability to reconfigure basic concepts and rules to understand and solve problems, not just on the computer, but in general;” may also serve the purposes of experimentation, without any aim to solve problems (see Bogost)
- provenance: a chronology or history of ownership, custody, and location of an object
- remediation: the cultural tendency to multiply media (hypermediacy) and also erase traces of mediation (immediacy); attends to how old media refashion themselves or are refashioned through new media (see Bolter and Grusin)
- speculative fiction: an umbrella term for science fiction, fantasy, futurisms, dystopias, utopias, horror, and the supernatural
- storage: the inscription or housing of records and files; emphasis often on discrete units and keeping things found; central to GLAM work (compare with memory)
- subjunctive knowledge: “knowledge about what might have been or could be or almost was” (see Kari Kraus)
- versioning: creating multiple releases of a design or text as well as assigning unique numbers or names to particular states of that design or text (see Kirschenbaum)
- work-expression-manifestation-item: works are realized through one or more expressions, which are embodied as manifestations, which are exemplified as items; for instance, content (work) may be written in English and French (expressions), published (manifestation) by a press, and circulated in batches of 5000 copies (each copy = an item) (see FRBR)
Tech Speak
- bit box: a collection of components for playing and/or designing tabletop games
- CNC: computer numerical control; used for additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques, from 3D printing to laser-cutting to routing
- Dublin Core: a small set of metadata vocabulary terms that can be used to describe digital resources as well as physical resources; often used to link resources together (“semantic web”)
- fabrication: usually refers to additive manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing; common in model design
- laser-cutting: using a laser to etch or cut materials; common in board design
- metadata: data about data; used to describe, structure, administer, qualify, and quantify resources; often standardized through a core terms and controlled vocabularies (see Bowker and Star)
- Markdown: a lightweight markup language with plain text formatting syntax; designed to be converted into other formats, such as HTML; extension/suffix is MD (but TXT also works)
- routing: using subtractive manufacturing to cut hard materials; common in model and board design
- Tabletop Simulator: allows people to play and create tabletop games in a multiplayer physics sandbox; created with the Unity engine
- text editor: a piece of software for editing “plain text” as character representations; seen as an alternative to what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) word processors and rich text; often entwined with rhetorics of command line or coding knowledge as well as distraction-free composition
Prototyping
Here are some types of prototypes that overlap with the work of media history, literary history, and textual criticism:
- imitation (labour of the text): to better understand the composition of a text by learning the techniques involved in its production
- forgery (economy of the text): to better understand the public perception and/or value of a text by learning the techniques involved in its production, but with intent to either deceive or reveal deception
- scenario (interaction with the text): to better understand how people may ultimately interpret a text by situating it in contexts of use and then observing those uses
- story (performance of the text): to better understand how a text gains cultural traction or builds identity by treating it as a script and performing it on or off record
- counterfactual (norms or conditions of the text): to better understand the biases of a text (or common interpretations of it) by constructing “what-if” alternatives to specific aspects of its history, content, or composition (see Bonsignore et al.)
- model (logic or conventions of the text): to better understand the mode, form, genre, scale, or design of a text by rendering it as an abstraction, using it to alter other texts (or aspects of itself), and determining why the changes are interesting (if at all)
- glitch (negotiations with the text): to better understand hiccups or surprises in a text by isolating them, applying them procedurally or randomly to other texts (or aspects of itself), and determining why the changes are interesting (if at all)
- wish (ideology of the text): to better understand the worldviews, belief systems, or desires of a text by increasing/decreasing their frequency, reversing them, or otherwise manipulating them and then determining why the changes are interesting (if at all)
Ways to speculate about history through prototyping (this adapts work by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby as well as Stuart Candy to think about the past and not just futures in speculative design):
- Probable: history that likely happened (something like the “attested state” of literary or cultural history upon which most scholarship is built)
- Plausible: history that could have happened (something like an “alternative state” of literary or cultural history that most scholars would entertain as likely or persuasive)
- Possible: history that potentially happened, or for which there is potential (something like a “relatable” or “suggested state” of literary or cultural history that most scholars could imagine)
- Preferable: history we (whoever “we” are) want to see in the world (something like a “projected” or “necessary state” of literary or cultural history that may be ignored, discounted, counterfactual, or fictional)
Prototyping may be considered a form of textual criticism that:
- Performs a method or physically manifests a way of reading through techniques such as imitation, alteration, scripting, repetition, simulation, recontextualization, modelling, counterfactuals, ruination, and trial-and-error testing, to name a few.
- Is interpreted or assessed based on its effectiveness as an experiment, or how persuasively it changes or isolates the systems through which texts and contexts afford meaning. Such systems may include matters of perception (e.g., how texts are seen or engaged), semantics (e.g., how signifiers relate and produce meaning), aesthetics (e.g., how texts are arranged and composed), politics (e.g., how texts enable or are embedded in ideologies), history (e.g., how texts are anchored in time and space but also move across them), materials (e.g., the stuff of which texts are made), and want or need (e.g., wishes, desires, uses, and applications).
- Expresses a form or model, which foregrounds use and prompts specific actions. Such actions may include writing in a margin or blank space, entering data, replying to a message, fixing a bug, following steps, signing, clicking, copying, pasting, deleting, scanning, redacting, searching, tagging, spamming, non-communication (e.g., in the case of frustration, silence, or confusion), or simply listening, watching, or reading. The consequences of these actions are not always predictable. In fact, the most persuasive prototypes foster surprise.
- Articulates language and meaning with matter. While prototypes are conceptual, they demonstrate (as opposed to re-present) how concepts work through materials and settings.
- Suggests or conjectures something instead of proving it. That is, it’s a situation for interpretation, not a standalone object. Meaning is an effect of experimentation, not an ingredient of it.
- Offers an imaginary scenario or solution to examine the results. Such solutions may include improving features of a text, stewarding it into the present, remediating it, remaking it, repairing it, or—to demonstrate why it was persuasive in the first place—ruining it. Any of these practices may experiment with alternate histories, probable futures, adjacent possibilities, or absences in the archive.
- Often uses ephemerality as a medium. That is, it tends to be more interested in what escapes than what persists. Here, we may consider how interactions, interfaces, performances, rhythms, impressions, feelings, and affects escape the record or are difficult to “capture” with technologies. Put this way, loss is not an anxiety or emphasis. Change becomes the most interesting or suggestive element of creativity and criticism.
Prototyping asks how texts address us like (or as) images (see WJT Mitchell). That is, how:
- Texts function as public documents, intended for passersby. Here, negative space, lines, typefaces, and font sizes are especially important (e.g., graphic design). As image, the text wants your attention. It is charged. It is read from a distance.
- Texts become symbols, intended for extended observation. Here, the form or “face” across characters is key (e.g., topography). As image, the text wants to escape reality. It welds feeling with arrangement, against the reduction of signs to mere vehicles for meaning.
- Texts manifest ways of reading, intended for familiarization or defamiliarization. Here, orientation, embodiment, and eye movement are most significant (e.g., interface design). As image, the text wants to afford certain readings. It influences or even structures vision.
- Texts create relations with other texts, intended for the production or analysis of patterns. Here, juxtaposition and reference are central (e.g., interaction design). As image, the text wants to be an index, with readers traversing across (or toggling between) it and something else. It connects.
- Texts are proof, intended as evidence. Here, the truth claims of a text are emphasized (e.g., forensics). As image, the text wants to be a record. It is like a photograph or signature. It points or demonstrates.
- Texts are objects or commodities, intended for collection and exhibition. Here, the value, availability, and economy of texts are privileged (e.g., book arts). As image, the text wants to be displayed. People travel to witness the original. Something about it cannot be copied.
- Texts are scans, intended primarily for access on screen. Here, recognition, formats, and relations between witnesses, editions, originals, and copies are the focus (e.g., versioning). As image, the text wants to be found or archived. It is its legibility.
- Texts are edges, intended to produce boundaries. Here, page size, margins, and paper matter (e.g., layout design). As image, the text wants to frame language and reading. It demarcates.
- Texts are windows or portals, intended for transparency. Here, clarity is everything (e.g., instrumental design). As image, the text gives people want they want or expect. It is a vehicle for exchange.
- Texts are mirrors, intended for reflection or re-presentation. Here, a lack of ornament, a use of familiar features, and an insistence on accuracy of perspective are significant (e.g., isomorphic design). As image, the text wants to express the world precisely and/or prompt awareness (or social- or self-awareness). It hails.
- Texts are tactile, intended for handling and touching. Here, texture is paramount (e.g., materials design). As image, the text wants to be tangible, or it does not want to be behind glass or screen. It exposes the limits of vision and ocularcentrism.
- Texts are processes, intended to resist alienation or abstraction. Here, composition, traces of interaction, gradual change, and the time spent making, reproducing, preserving, and disposing are most important (e.g., labour studies). As image, the text wants to be a verb. It is mutable. It decays, rots, morphs, grows. It is also tied to various “invisible” contributors and acts of production.
- Texts are dogma, intended for followers. Here, lists, point form, and order are foregrounded (e.g., litany). As image, the text wants to be copied, distributed, consulted, and observed. It directs or guides.
- Texts are policy or law, intended for nations, citizens, or employees. Here, an absence of aesthetics, a lack of variation, or an assertion of consistency is crucial (e.g., protocol). The text does not want to be an image. It wants to be code or procedure, with a standard. It is executable.
How do artists’ books, manifestos, and zines inform tabletop design? Some possible lines of inquiry:
- Form: How does the game interrogate the material and conceptual form of tabletop games?
- Repetition: How does the game resist standardized or mechanical repetition? Consider how perception is disciplined and trained.
- Imagination: How does the game rely on imaginative uses of the means or modes of reproduction?
- Publisher: How is the game published, and by whom?
- Audience: How does the game imply an informed audience? What does it assume about players?
- The Multiple: How is (or isn’t) the game a democratic multiple? How is (or isn’t) it accessible?
- Ideology: How does the game direct, manipulate, instruct, or hail players? How assertive is it?
- Advertisement: How does the game sell itself?
- Indie: How is the game crafted? What is its relation to commercial media? What traces of the designer persist in the game?
- Community: Does the game involve special-interest communities? For whom and by whom is it made? Do these communities tend to see themselves in the mainstream? Does the mainstream speak for them?
- Subjectivity: What intersubjective activities does the game prompt? Consider, e.g., how zines are exchanged, mailed, and repurposed, or how they play a role in f2f meetings, networking, organizing, and community-building.
- Object: How and by whom is the game collected? Where is it found? How is value assigned to it? By whom?
How to integrate ludic algorithms (see Nowviskie) and critical play (see Flanagan) into game design:
- How does the game understand play as an embodied process and situated action?
- How could the game refrain from treating its players as “users,” or as audiences merely in receipt of a product to be collected and consumed?
- How could the game help people to think through (and not just rehearse) its system of rules and procedures? Its content model?
- How could the game be more than the “output” of a designer? How could it be a space or situation for interpretation? How could it and its context of play afford different play styles? How could it be, e.g., reskinned, unplayed, or rewritten?
- How could the game’s procedures facilitate interpretation (as opposed to producing meaning mechanically or mathematically)? How could those procedures support values, and which values?
- How could the game afford alternatives to popular play spaces? How might play (and not just design) change the norms of games and gaming cultures? Of dominant themes and mechanics?
- How could the game prompt a “phase change”? How would that phase change be defined, by whom, and with what social, cultural, political, and/or aesthetic goals in mind?
Some tips for prototyping tabletop games in this seminar:
- Avoid Separating Rules from “Fluff”: players tend to divide rules and mechanics from backstory, context, and other elements of the theme; muddy or complicate that division; design to integrate the former (rules) with the latter (theme) (see Avery Alder).
- Balance Directions with Trust: use your prototype to build relationships with players without explicitly telling them what to do; smart components can help people to intuit how to play your game (see Avery Alder).
- Consider the Order of Operations: the “serial position effect” states that things presented at the beginning and end of a sequence are more memorable; this effect shapes game design (how content is arranged) as well as player action (what they do or select).
- Determine Cause or Effect: determine whether you want to lead people to why (design for cause) or prompt them to experience what (design for effect); or perhaps you have another approach in mind (see Kirschenbaum).
- Develop Your Theme over Time: separate your theme’s information into layers and present only what’s necessary for that stage in the game; progressive disclosure during a play session (or campaign) reduces a player’s cognitive and kinematic performance load; reduce cognitive load by reducing information density; reduce kinematic load by reducing steps in a task.
- Don’t Neglect Your Text: as you proceed with making a game, don’t forget your -ism and primary text; keep them both in conversation with your prototype as it changes from week to week; use your -ism and text to ground your experiments in the particulars of history and to avoid scope or feature creep.
- Experiment with Variation: modify your prototype and study the modifications during playtesting; cut a rule, add a rule, change the player order, cut a hat rack, add a hat rack, cut the timer, add a timer, offer three end conditions, offer only one end condition, increase the number of players, decrease the number of players, make it symmetrical, or make it asymmetrical.
- Focus on the Critical 20%: focus your time and prototyping on the critical 20 percent of your game; 80 percent of play may involve 20 percent of a game’s features.
- Give Your Playtesters a Problem: before people playtest your game, tell them about a problem you’re facing and request feedback to address it; write down the problem for them, if possible.
- Isolate Aspects of Your State: instead of prototyping everything at once, isolate specific aspects of your game state and ask people to playtest them for you.
- Know Your Mechanics: identify which mechanics you’re using and how you’re using or tweaking them; communicate the mechanics to playtesters, if need be.
- Let People Audit It: provide playtesters with an inventory of your game’s content and then ask them to audit it by performing a Kano analysis: identify which features are required (baseline or quality features), which are desired (important one-dimensional features), which are surprising (satisfying or attractive features), which are neutral (features producing indifference), and which are anti-features (to be removed).
- Mind the Important Features: keep important components of your game close and large; Fitts’ Law states that the time required to touch an object is a function of the object’s size and distance.
- Nudge by Design: guide or modify player behaviours without restricting options; use smart defaults, clear feedback, aligned incentives, structured choices, and visible goals.
- Play It before It’s Ready: early on, don’t become preoccupied with details; play prototypes made with index cards, pens, and paper (see Avery Alder).
- Prototype in Parallel: create multiple prototypes that could serve the same ends or purposes; providing people with a few options may increase the quality of playtesting and feedback.
- Provide Good Entry Points: good entry points into a game or play session feature minimal barriers, points of prospect, and progressive lures; entry points should survey available options and provide visible navigation options as well as orientation cues.
- Stabilize Some Parts to Experiment with Others: if you want to test a specific aspect of your prototype, try stabilizing everything else to encourage the isolated volatility of that one aspect; stable environments encourage refinement while volatile environments encourage experimentation; also, Hick’s Law states that the time it takes to make a decision increases with the number of options.
- Think Aloud: while playtesting, ask people to verbalize what they are doing and thinking as they complete a task; you can do the same when introducing your game or aspects of it to them.
- Try Extending a Task: according to the Zeigarnik Effect, interrupted or incomplete tasks are better remembered than complete tasks; legacy games and campaigns rely on this to-be-continued dimension of storytelling and play by prompting additional play sessions or scenarios; puzzle and abstract games extend interest by providing no definitive ending or solution.
- Watch those Lines: things connected with lines or boxes are perceived to be more related than things not connected by lines or boxes; also, players may create their own “desire lines” (expressed through wear and tear) through repeated play.
- Write Your Prototype a Letter: after a few weeks of prototyping, personify your game and write it a love letter and a breakup letter; doing so may help you to think through the state of your game but also how people (you included) may personify it.
